The concept for this game began in 2002 with a visit to a classroom of third-grade students. I had observed that the chemical elements on the periodic table were no more complicated than a popular card game that the children were playing. I had also observed when teaching freshman and remedial chemistry at the university level that many students were needlessly afraid of chemistry. On my next visit to the third grade class I brought a prototype of the game, and the children were able to play successfully.
My hope is that this game will introduce students to the idea of learning chemistry, the elements of the periodic table and how to combine them to make compounds in an enjoyable manner, with no fear of science! |
